IITs could change pattern for JEE Advanced this year 2020, & also discuss syllabus reduction
New Delhi: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are discussing a pattern change for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced this year after receiving several requests from various stakeholders, including states, to make the exam easier in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, ThePrint has learnt.
JEE Advanced is held for admission to the 23 IITs across the country. The responsibility of conducting the exam lies with one of the IITs every year, and IIT Delhi is in charge this year.
The matters pertaining to changing the exam pattern and possible reduction of syllabus will be taken up for discussion at the IITs in their next Joint Admission Board (JAB) meeting to be held later this week.
An HRD ministry official, who did not wish to be named, told ThePrint that a final decision on the exam pattern will only be taken after the JAB meeting.
In the last JAB meeting called on Friday, IITs decided to do away with the mandatory criterion of 75 per cent marks in Class 12.
This year, the candidates who have qualified for JEE Advanced will be able to seek admission in IITs, irrespective of the marks they score in Class 12.
Older IITs not in favour of making exams easy
“All these matters (syllabus, exam pattern etc.) are at a discussion stage currently,” a senior official told ThePrint.
Another official privy to the developments said older IITs are not in favour of making the exam easy this year, as they fear it will set a precedent.
“There are requests from states to change the pattern of JEE Advanced and make the exam easier this year. Older IITs are not in favour of changing making the question paper easier because if it’s done this year, it will be like starting a trend. Anyway, the students who prepare for IITs start doing so from Class 10 itself and loss of studies for four months should not matter in that case,” he noted.
This is not the first time the IITs have been asked to revise the difficulty level of JEE Advanced.
In 2018, the Ministry of Human Resource Development had asked them to bring down the difficulty level, saying the JEE Advanced was too difficult and seats were left vacant because many were not able to clear the exam.
The IITs had, however, refused to comply then and had decided to stick to their set standards.
The JEE Advanced is slated to be held on 27 September, after being rescheduled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
